This study aims to find the relationship between optimism and depression in the elderly. The hypothesis in this study is that there is a negative relationship between optimism and depression in the elderly. The subjects of this study were 66 elderly people in Lubuk Linggau City. The measuring instrument used in this study is the optimism scale (Life Orientation Test-Revised) by Scheier & Carver (1985) in the study conducted by Simanjuntak (2011) and the depression scale (Geriatric Depression Scale) developed by Adams (2001) in the research that conducted by Mutiara (2016). The results showed a negative relationship between optimism and depression in the elderly (r = -0.703; p = 0.000).en_US
