Abstract
The rise of social media in the digital era marks a significant breakthrough in technological
advancement. Through strategic use, social media is employed to promote specific rural
tourism initiatives as part of sustainable community development. This study examines the
empowerment of Kemirikebo’s Downhill Tourism (KDH), a tourism site located in the village
of Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. KDH has diversified its economy by developing a downhill
biking tourism track. The potential of KDH as a tourist destination became apparent during the
COVID-19 pandemic, as more visitors sought outdoor activities. By utilizing Kabir’s data
analysis techniques and referencing several previous studies, this research highlights that
limited human resources, technical expertise, and marketing strategies have hindered the site
from reaching its full potential.
This research investigates the crucial role Instagram has played as a promotional tool for KDH
in raising awareness and engaging with both local and international audiences. By analyzing
Instagram’s impact on KDH’s growth, the study identifies key challenges, such as the lack of
digital literacy among local operators and the decline in visitor numbers post-pandemic. The
research employs qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews with local stakeholders
and community members, to assess the effectiveness of social media in empowering tourism.
The findings suggest that KDH’s exposure and visibility as a tourist destination could be
significantly improved through a more strategic and consistent approach to Instagram content.
This study contributes to the broader discussion on community empowerment through tourism
and digital platforms by offering practical recommendations for integrating social media into
rural tourism development strategies.
