Abstract

Cocoa is one of Indonesia's leading export commodities with adequate labor and land area, Indonesia is the third largest cocoa producer in the world after Ivory Coast and Ghana. However, Indonesia’s cocoa exports are still dominated by raw cocoa beans without any fermentation, while to improve the cocoa beans selling price must pass through the fermentation stage. The government should give more attention to agricultural commodities to increase the agricultural productivity, because agriculture is the mainstay sub-sector that give big contributios to the country's foreign exchange. It is expected that the competitiveness of Indonesian cocoa will continue to increase every year. In 2012 until 2016, Indonesia has the strength of competitiveness and comparative advantages in cocoa commodities, evidenced by the calculation of Revealed Competitive Advantage (RCA) method that has a value greater than 1 and enhanced by Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage (RSCA) method that is more value large from 0. To encourage added value to cocoa exports, the government needs to improve infrastructure and national cocoa research and development, and subsidize farmers to improve the quality and quality of cocoa.
